Project Description
Image reconstruction methods for positron emission tomography
Positron emission tomography (PET) has been an important imaging modality for cancer diagnosis. With the advent of radiothernoatics and growing need for clinical imaging of neurodegenerative diseases, new types of PET systems are needed. Students can participate in three topics of this research:
(1) characterization or design of novel PET detectors,
(2) novel system designs using Monte Carlo simulation, and
(3) image reconstruction methods, including the use of artificial intelligence, the enable the development of these new systems.
Requirement
Topic 1: radiation detection physics and basic electronics; PCB design and FPGA programming optional
Topic 2: python, concept of Monte Carlo methods; C/C++ optional
Topic 3: python, linear algebra, optimization theory; C/C++ optional
